Books I'm Reading in 2012

What to read in 2012--that's the question. Here's my answer. In this post, I'll be listing the books I'm reading this year! Here's to a New Year and hoping that I'll have some ME time to read. The Money Saving Mom's Budget tops off my list.

1. I like Crystal Paine, the Money Saving Mom even though I've never met her! That's saying a lot. Paine's writing on her blog is so engaging and she's got great things to say. So, I'll start the New Year reading the Money Saving Mom's Budget.

2. I read Sara Gruen's Water for Elephants iconin a book club a while ago, and it was one of my favorite books. I just recently saw the movie, but I still love the book more. She can write AND tell a great story. That's what I like in a writer. I plan to read another book by Sara Gruen this year, so I'm looking forward to reading Riding Lessons.

Lessons: Teaching about the Chinese New Year with Fun Crafts

The Chinese New Year starts on January 23rd this year, but we're gearing up to learn about the Chinese New Year with lots of classroom activities, crafts, and fun for our social studies unit.

First, we read Chinese New Year icon by Kate Marsico.

icon iconI really enjoy reading books from this Cultural Holidays series. Some of the other books in the series cover Cinco de Mayo, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and more.

The reading level is just right for my son an the book covers many aspects about the Chinese New Year with enough detail to make it interesting for children. I'm one still searching for a social studies book that engages and teaches with more than just a lot of pictures and a few words, so these Cultural Holidays books do a great job to supplement our social studies curriculum.

We learned about the Legend of Lian. Lian was a terrible dragon who, on on the Chinese New year, ventured into villages and ate any person he saw. Soon, the villagers discovered that this dragon was afraid of loud noises and red, so they started shooting fireworks and covering the village with red including red lanterns.

For our lesson today, we used a small paper bag, glue, and construction paper to create our own Lian. The directions were to be creative and have fun.

Tomorrow, we will create couplets on RED paper to scare Lian away.

Cursive or Print: A Homeschool Cursive Handwriting Decision

So, when you homeschool, when should you teach your child to write in cursive? I know some homeschool curriculums start teaching this skill very early--even kindergarten. There is the idea that starting cursive earlier is easier for a child when they are just starting to learn. Hmm.

I remember being in 3rd grade when I learned to write in cursive. I hated it. I also had to write I will not talk in class IN CURSIVE on the blackboard one time during recess!

I  have a 2nd grade boy whose print handwriting still needs a little work. I decided to wait until he was ready to try cursive. Guess what? Over Christmas, there were name tags that were written in cursive (not to mention a few notes to myself about what I still needed to buy). He really wanted to be able to read those name labels. So then it hit me. Why not start with teaching him to read cursive, to recognize words and letters. He's a great reader, so this is the next natural step for us.

My plan is to write small passages in cursive and let him trace the entire words with the goal of just recognizing the word and tracing...not practicing cursive. No -1 for going below the line, etc. Then we'll see how things progress. My goal is not to complete our cursive training by a certain point, but to work with it over time too.

I've also decided to use it as a way to practice those letters we learned to print in kindergarten. For example, I ask my son to print his name using his best print handwriting. Then I write his name in cursive and he traces it. Hence, he learns to read his name in cursive.

I used Handwritingworkseets.com to create a passage in print and cursive that reads:

Today is Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012. It is ____ degrees outside.

My son will practice his standard printing first after he reads the outdoor thermometer and places the temperature on the line in the passage. Then he will trace the cursive words and try not to lift his pencil with the goal of recognizing the words.

And that's the cursive plan for this week. We'll see how it goes.

Free Rice for Others and Free Vocabulary Drill for Kids

I just found a great new site to help my 2nd grade son practice his vocabulary and give to others at the same time. That's a very COOL thing for this homeschool mama who sometimes needs a little technology integration to liven up our homeschool lessons.

Send your kiddo to http://freerice.com and for each vocabulary word that your child gets correct, the United Nations World Food Programme will donate 10 grains of rice.

                                        page at http://freerice.com

Click the SUBJECT tab to take free tests on other subjects too like free art tests, free flag identification test, free basic math tests, free capitals tests, and even free multiplication tests.

For even more fun, let your child figure out how many grains of rice were donated. If you have rice at home, weigh it. Figure out how many grains you would need for a meal. Figure out how many grains you would need to fill a cup. Just have fun and let learning take place.

Enjoy!
